Healing guide

Look after your new tattoo

Follow these steps so your tattoo heals cleanly and keeps its colour for years.

A tattoo is an open wound while it heals. The first two weeks are the most important. Be gentle, keep it clean and do not rush the process.

1 · First 24 – 48 hours

Leave the protective film or bandage on for the time Joss tells you. After removing it, wash your hands, then gently clean the tattoo with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with a clean paper towel — do not rub.

2 · Moisturise lightly

Apply a very thin layer of the recommended aftercare cream or an unscented moisturiser. The skin should breathe; too much cream can clog pores and slow healing.

3 · During healing

Wash and moisturise 2 – 3 times a day for about two weeks. Let any scabs or dry skin fall off naturally. Do not pick, scratch or peel the area, even if it itches.

What to avoid

  • No swimming, baths, saunas or hot tubs until fully healed
  • No direct sun or tanning beds — cover the tattoo or stay in the shade
  • No tight clothing or rough fabrics rubbing against the tattoo
  • No heavy gym sessions or sports that make you sweat heavily for the first week
  • No scratching, picking scabs or letting pets lick the area
  • No alcohol-based products, perfume or strong chemicals on the tattoo

Healing timeline

Most tattoos look healed on the surface after 2 – 3 weeks, but the deeper skin can take 4 – 6 weeks. If you notice unusual redness, swelling, heat or discharge, contact us or a doctor.
